Let your Dragon Ball friends retell their story

Z Warrior Legend, or Dragon Ball AFK and Dragon Ball Idle, is a free role-playing mobile video game wherein you can assemble an elite team of characters from the classic action anime and manga series, Dragon Ball. This 2D hero collection game features the huge cast of the popular franchise.

Similar to Dragon Ball Legends and Dragon Ball Z: Dokkan Battle, Z Warrior Legend allows you to use one of the hundreds of playable characters in the story—including some of their powered-up versions—in battles against the iconic series’ villains. However, this game uses auto-battle and focuses more on stat management.

Manage their skills and equipment

Dragon Ball is a 1984 Japanese media franchise created by Akira Toriyama. The series follows the adventures of Son Goku as he trains in martial arts and explores the world in search of the seven orbs known as the Dragon Balls—which summon a wish-granting dragon when gathered. His journey follows his growth from child to man and he eventually gains friends, a family, and battles powerful enemies.

Due to the huge cast that formed over the years, it became easy for the series to be adapted to mobile games, especially for the gacha genre. Z Warrior Legend provides this gameplay and makes it easier to play with its auto-battle system. In this game, you can summon characters with the right currency. They vary in rarity, abilities, and roles—which you must take into account when sending them to battle.

The game is straightforward enough since there’s a tutorial. However, things can get convoluted pretty quickly. First, the user interface is immediately filled with numerous buttons—half of which are just for in-game purchases. Secondly, there’s not a lot of cutscenes to retell Goku’s amazing adventures. Lastly, you can’t check the names of characters until you get them. It doesn’t help that some are just other versions of existing characters.

Could use some more polish

All in all, Z Warrior Legend is easy to play for any type of Dragon Ball fan but don’t expect a lot of meat in the gameplay itself. You get to collect a bunch of your favorite characters but you can’t really control them yourself. The interface can be a hassle, too—with lots of unnecessary buttons for in-game purchases and lacking the ability to display character names.

PROS

  • Easy tutorial
  • Lots of iconic playable characters
  • Convenient auto-battle system
  • Different roles and abilities for the characters

CONS

  • Too many main interface buttons for in-app purchases
  • Can’t check character cards unless you win them
  • A severe lack of story cutscenes
